3-Time Olympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder Aaron Peirsol has hosted Grassroots Training Clinics for Beijing Youth. World Champion in the 200-meter backstroke, Aaron Peirsol, has visited Beijing, China this past week to share his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the sport of swimming with young athletes.
A 21-year-old Irvine, California native, Peirsol is a 3-time Olympic gold medalist in both the 100-m and 200-m backstroke disciplines and the 4x100-meter relay. He has three world championship gold medals, has been a world record holder for the past two years, and was named the 2005 USA Swimming Athlete of the Year.

Peirsol, on a Nike-sponsored trip, was hosting a day-long training clinic for 7 to 9-year old swimmers. The  trip has includeed motivational speaking opportunities, autograph sessions, a press conference and the special arranged clinics. The charismatic backstroker joins Nike in an effort to assist Chinese athletes and coaches in improving performances in international competition by interacting with the children of Beijing. Peirsol hopes to pique their interest in swimming and inspire them to set and reach their goals in and out of the water. The trip also provides Peirsol with a unique opportunity to visit Beijing and begin to experience the Chinese culture in advance of the 2008 Olympic Games.

"At the minimum, I can do as well as last time," he said during a training clinic with the Chinese National swimming team organized by Nike. "Once you have won three gold medals, you have the confidence that you can do that again."

At the press conference he said: "I haven't reached my 'goal',"."After winning three gold medals from the Athens Games, I stepped back and knew I have accomplished all my goals, and I thought 'what's next?"..."A month later I realized that I am still 22, and I am still an improving athlete and even set my best mark one year after the Olympics." - "I am looking for something of consistency, not at one specific time.

Peirsol had finished a three-day clinic with Eric Hansen, Head coach of the US men's swimming team in Beijing. Top Chinese swimmers joined in the clinic, including Asian record holder Ouyang Kunpeng, world championship bronze medallist Wu Peng and women's breaststroke veteran Qi Hui. Peirsol also held a clinic with young Chinese swimming enthusiasts on Sunday. Peirsol said he is expecting an explosive performance from the Chinese swimmers who are enjoying the home advantage.

"Most hosts are doing much better than expected, and China has that advantage now," said Peirsol at the end. "They are ready to do well in 2008."
